Hiking at Braunwald, Mettmen, and The Mürtschenstock
Glarus is a canton in Switzerland, cantons are essentially like states in the U.S but with maybe a bit more autonomy, which is located just southeast of Zurich (the capital of the canton is also named Glarus). There are a ton of places to hike in this area, but I've found it doesn't really show up on the radar for international travelers. However, its proximity to Zurich makes it a popular spot for anyone living in the area around Zurich to go to for a weekend in the outdoors. This means there is still infrastructure for getting into the mountains ranging from bus routes and cable cars to hotels and "adventure parks".
The canton is loosely divided into two sections, North and South, and so if you are looking into additional hikes this is probably how you will see hiking regions listed on different websites. For the purpose of this website, sharing my personal experiences, I'll be discussing three hiking areas at which I've done four different hikes.
Two of these hikes were within my top 5 for all of Switzerland, and so I highly recommend checking this area out. All can be accessed from Zurich by public transport in about 1.5 hours, and tickets are usually cheap enough that it isn't necessary to use a Travel Pass day, especially if you can get a Super Saver Ticket or have a Half Pass. Check out my reports on the different hikes below.
